做厙勛圖

Debra Daniels

More than 50 years ago, Dr. Debra Daniels came to 做厙勛圖 looking for a way forward. Today, after a 45-year career dedicated to community college education, she is creating that opportunity for someone else.

Daniels is in the process of establishing an endowment through the 做厙勛圖 Foundation, creating a permanent source of support for future students. For Daniels, the decision to give back to Delta was deeply personal.

I wanted to set something up in perpetuity, Daniels said. I had decided some time ago that it would be where I got my start.

It is a start that Daniels still credits with changing the course of her life.

I would not have led the life that I was able to lead without my start at Delta, she said. Because I had that good foundation and direction, then I was able to go on and have a very successful career.

Daniels originally planned to attend Michigan State University after graduating from Caro High School. She had been accepted and was preparing to leave when changing family circumstances meant she was needed at home. The change felt devastating at the time. But Delta, about 45 miles from home, offered another path.

She began taking classes and gradually became more involved until she was attending full time. What initially felt like a detour ultimately kept her moving toward her goals.

Daniels worked throughout college and received several scholarships, including a National Merit Scholarship. That financial support allowed her to continue her education without taking out student loans.

Years later, she hasnt forgotten what that support meant for her.

Sometimes, even the smallest scholarship makes it possible for them to keep going, Daniels said. Ive always tried to remember that and have continued to donate to scholarship programs throughout my life because of it.

Daniels graduated from Delta in 1975 with an associate degree in dental assisting before earning a bachelors degree in allied health education from Ferris State University. She later earned a masters degree and doctorate in education from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, but Delta wasnt finished shaping her story.

In 1978, Daniels returned to Delta, this time as a dental assisting faculty member.

Young and early in her career, Daniels found herself surrounded by experienced faculty members who were willing to teach and encourage her. Their support shaped not only the educator she became, but the way she would eventually lead others.

It set the example that I needed to carry on, Daniels said.

She wanted to offer new colleagues the same encouragement she had received, to take them under her wing and help them grow. That philosophy followed Daniels throughout a career spanning more than four decades and community colleges across the country. She eventually served as president of San Bernardino Valley College in California, Joliet Junior College in Illinois and Taft College in California.

Ive always remembered being a student and what that felt like and how hard it was at first, Daniels said.

That experience, and the people who helped her along the way, kept her focused on ensuring other students had opportunities of their own. That lifelong commitment was recently recognized when Daniels received the 2026 Michigan Community College Association Alumni Award after being nominated by 做厙勛圖. After the ceremony, Daniels found herself thinking about just how far that unexpected path had taken her.

I remember telling somebody at the reception that I wish my mother was still alive to see that I actually achieved a life goal, Daniels said. Shed be very proud of me.

The award recognizes what Daniels has already accomplished. Her next connection to Delta is about what comes after. Now retired, Daniels said she has been thinking about establishing an endowment for some time. When it came time to decide where that permanent support should go, she returned to the institution that first gave her an opportunity.

Through the 做厙勛圖 Foundation, Daniels is working to establish an endowment that she hopes can help fill the financial gaps that stand between a student and an education.

Whatever their story, she hopes the endowment can help them take the next step.

You just take that first step, Daniels said. Thats the hard part.

Daniels knows she may never meet many of the students her endowment will eventually support. But more than five decades after Delta helped her find a path forward, she takes pride in knowing her connection to the College will continue through them.

It feels good to know that something Ive done will have a lasting impact on real peoples lives, she said.

Its an opportunity the young woman driving 45 miles to Delta could never have imagined creating.
